Problem redefinition paper

Hi everyone. We are a group of lecturers learning about TRIZ, we have stuck in a concept names “Problem Redefinition” from CREAX software. The reason to write in thie blog is to know if anyone knows about a paper or reference which might help us to clarify this concept?

  3. Dear Navneet, that´s right the Creax way of problem reformulation is where we are stuck. We are a group of lecturers who are meeting every Friday to learn more about the different tools of TRIZ, the problem we have is that we might have used a wrong problem and started to dream. Trying to find the evolution for a wheelchair, someone said that the problem should be stated as “To provide movement to a handicapped person” and trying to narrow and broaden the problem many strange things started to appear. I felt we lost ourselves in the definition of the problem. That is our situation. Could you help us? Thanks in advanced.

    I am sorry for such a late reply, things have kept me busy.

    My learning while exploring the problem space is to explore it in as many strange ways and with as many different ways before reaching to the interesting set of problems through a convergence process. Looks like we do not spend much time in exploring the problem space. One point I can suggest is explore both the narrowing and broadening using the “why-what stops” recursive hierarchy. Also apply the nine screen/nine windows to the problem, get a large number of associated problems by the use of all the tools – without evaluating – where we are going. Just keep on expanding, broadening, narrowing so that you really characterize the scenarios/problems/situations in ways that open gives a holistic understanding.
    Then the convergence happens towards key problems, one of the ways is to look at what are the key contradictions – because the subsystems evolve at different rates, contradictions are part of every system. However, there are 8 laws and the cardinal law of moving towards ideal system where the function is achieved with minimum resources and no adverse effects on the system.

    So in nutshell – please start with functions – which I think was nicely formulated as to provide movement to a handicapped person. May be starting with 9 windows first may help. Nevertheless – please dont feel about strange things – they are best whenever you start defining and exploring the space. I think it was Einstein who said,” If an idea at first doesnt appear absurd, it has no hope”.

All these are free courses that we do, starting 2 hours a week as an elective non credit courses, and sometime a 2 days TRIZ workshop.
